1. First Hadeeth/ Madeenah Series/ Arabic Grammar

الدرس الاول في الحديث / اللغة العربية

عن جابر رضي الله عنه قال

قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه و سلم) "لا تأكلوا
بالشمال فان الشيطان يأكل بالشمال" رواه مسلم

On the Authority of Jaabir (May Allaah be please with him) who said, that the Messenger of Allaah said: " Do not eat with the left (left hand) because the shaytaan eats with the left. Narrated by Muslim

كلمات في الحديث
Vocabulary in the Hadith

الشمال: ضد اليمين
the left (ash-shimaal) is opposite of right (al-yameen)

ضد الجنوب : الشمال بالفتح و ضد اليمين :الشمال بالكسر
the opposite of the South (al-januub) is the North (ash-shamaal) with a fatha الفتح and the opposite of left is right (ash-shimaal) with a kasr الكسر.

و الشيطان جمعه الشياطين
And shaytaan (the devil-iblees) its plural is the devils (ash-shayaaطeen)

تأكل : لا تأكل

تأكل = you eat or you're eating

لا تأكل = do not eat! ( this لا in front of this verb is call لا الناهية which is a negative command. For example: لا تشرب do not drink لا تجلس do not sit, etc.

Also when you put this negative command in front of a word it makes it
مجزوم which means it takes a sukuun. So if the verb originally had a ضمة like tajlisu if لا ناهية is place in front in front it makes it la tajlis with out the ضمة .

In the hadith it mentions, "
لا تأكلوا بالشمال " and this word is originally تأكلون but when لا الناهية is placed in front it becomes مجزوم by dropping the ن .
